The Osprey Nib Guide - Which size is right for me?
Standard Writing Nibs
Everyday note-taking, journaling, and general use.
-
EF (Extra Fine): Best for small, precise handwriting and thin lines. Ideal for cheap or thin paper where ink bleeding might be an issue.
-
F (Fine): The standard "go-to" for most writers. Clean, clear, and highly legible for daily notes.
-
M (Medium): A bit wetter and smoother. It brings out more of the ink's true color and is great for general correspondence.
-
B (Broad): Great for a bold, confident signature or a very smooth, juicy writing experience.
Straight Stub / Calligraphy Nibs
For crisp line variation—thick vertical strokes and thin horizontal strokes.
-
1.1mm: The perfect "everyday" calligraphy nib. It gives your regular handwriting instant flair without forcing you to change your letter size.
-
1.5mm: A step up for larger lettering, greeting cards, and elegant journal headings.
-
1.9mm: Moving into serious calligraphy territory. Great for visible script work and highlighting shading inks.
-
2.3mm & 2.7mm: Massive, dramatic nibs meant for large-scale Gothic/Blackletter scripts, document certificates, and creating ink swatches.
Oblique Calligraphy Nibs
Cut at an angle to accommodate specific hand positions.
-
1.5mm, 2.3mm, and 2.7mm Oblique: These are a lifesaver for left-handed writers (who often struggle with straight stubs catching on the paper) or right-handed calligraphers who naturally tilt their pens at an angle. They provide the same dramatic line variation as the straight stubs but with a smoother glide for angled writing.
The Hybrid Alternative
-
Roller Tip: A brilliant inclusion for users who love the pen body but want the ultimate, foolproof convenience of a standard rollerball. Perfect for quick writing on the go, carbon-copy forms, or sharing the pen with someone not used to fountain pens.
